About the Film Grain

Film grain breaks up digital smoothness with per-pixel luminance noise — the texture that makes photos feel analog. Light grain (15–30%) adds warmth and hides banding; heavy grain (60%+) creates gritty, documentary-style drama.

How it works

The tool synthesizes a per-pixel noise field seeded per image — so it never repeats in visible patterns — and blends it over your photo at the intensity you choose. Monochromatic grain preserves color while adding the tactile texture that clean digital images lack.

How to use it

Add up to 10 images, set the grain amount (subtle is usually better), and process. Zoom into a preview to judge the texture, then download individually or zipped.

Supported formats & limitations

Accepts .jpg, .png and .webp up to 30MB each, 10 per batch. Heavy grain fights JPEG compression — output as PNG or high-quality WebP so the noise doesn't smudge into artifacts. Grain also slightly reduces compressibility; that's physics.

Common use cases

Giving digital photos a film-era mood, matching new product shots to vintage campaign imagery, adding texture to flat illustration backgrounds, and making clean AI-generated or stock images feel authentically photographic.

Frequently asked questions

How private is Film Grain?

Everything runs locally in your browser via the Canvas API. Your picture never leaves your machine — there is no upload step at all, so processing is as private as working in an offline editor.

Which file types are supported?

JPG, PNG or WEBP files up to 30 MB each are accepted. Drop in one file or a whole batch (paste and drag also work), check the preview, and export in the format shown at the download step.

How many images can I process at once?

There are no artificial limits: use it as often as you like, free. Practical caps are 30 MB per image and 10 files per batch, and outputs stay watermark-free.

Can I fine-tune the result before downloading?

You can adjust Grain intensity. Results are previewed after processing, so tweak values and re-run until the output looks right.
