About the Compress PNG

PNG files store pixels losslessly, so real savings come from reducing the color palette. This tool quantizes your PNG to as few as 8 colors using median-cut color reduction, which can shrink flat graphics, logos and screenshots dramatically while preserving transparency. Everything happens locally in your browser.

How it works

PNG files are lossless, so this tool shrinks them by reducing color count instead of discarding pixels: a median-cut quantizer builds an optimal 8–256 color palette, then re-encodes the image as an indexed PNG. Flat-color graphics and screenshots drop dramatically in size; photographic PNGs shrink less.

How to use it

Add your .png files, choose a color budget from the dropdown — 256 for gentle savings, 32 or fewer for aggressive ones — and optionally convert to grayscale for another size win. Process, check each preview on its checkerboard backdrop, then download.

Supported formats & limitations

Input is .png only, up to 10 files of 30MB each. Transparency is preserved through every palette level. Photos saved as PNG may band slightly at 32 colors or below — test 128 or 256 first, or convert them to JPG instead for much smaller results.

Common use cases

Ideal for app screenshots, UI mockups, logos, charts and pixel art where crisp edges matter. Developers trim PNG assets before shipping; support teams shrink bug-report screenshots; designers flatten hand-offs so clients receive lean files.

Frequently asked questions

Will my PNG stay lossless?

Color reduction is lossy, but at 256 colors most graphics look identical. Transparency is always preserved.

Why is PNG compression different from JPEG?

PNG keeps every pixel crisp — this tool reduces the palette instead of blurring details.

Will compressing a PNG make it blurry?

No. PNG compression here works by reducing the number of colors (palette quantization), not by smoothing pixels. Flat graphics, screenshots and logos come out visually identical; photographs with millions of colors benefit from lowering the color count less aggressively.

Is transparency preserved when compressing PNG?

Yes — the alpha channel survives palette reduction, so transparent logos and overlays stay transparent. Only the optional grayscale toggle changes the colors themselves.
